What brand is your dvd burner? Is DMA MODE enabled? What software are you using to burn your SONY dvd media? Need more info than what you've posted.

try using IMGBURN to burn your SONY dvd media. VERBATIM and TAIYO YUDEN are considered good quality dvd media. SONY can be in my opinion HIT or MISS. check to see that your drive is in DMA MODE. here's a guide on how to check if it's in DMA MODE:

sony isn't the best dvd media. verbatims are on sale right now at office max. check to see if DMA is enabled because if it is NOT that's why your burning at slow speeds, the drive is stuck in PIO MODE.
