  3. Read some of the guides, particularly how to convert and author. They are on the left of this page.

    Essential software IMHO

Virtualdub, good for checking for bad frames, and decompressing audio with variable bitrate. TMPGEnc cannot handle audio with VBR so you need to save it uncompressed (its all in the guides)

    TMPGEnc, excellent mpeg encoder

Nero or VCDeasy for authoring and burning.

Be prepared to do a fair bit of reading, to get good results you need to put some effort in.

Yep, I think you probably are!

Anyway, do what Craig Tucker suggested, read some of the guides on this site as well as the sections under WHATIS. Download the software needed (much is freeware or shareware) and try a few things. When you come unstuck (which you will) feel free to come back and ask specific questions. If you want useful answers remember to give as much detail as you can about your source material, what you have done so far and where it seems to go wrong, including details of any error messages you getr. Thay way people have a good chance of helping you.

    Food for thought:

A 700 MB AVI that is a single movie can be a LOT bigger in MPG. You can hit roughly 45 minutes/800 MB for for MPG. It's not as 'efficient' as DivX/XviD. However, 1 CD AVI's generaly are HEAVILY compressed, and it really shows on a TV.

I'd suggest you backup your own DVD's, the end results are 10x better than converting an overcompressed AVI.

That's true. So many people believe that converting divx movies to vcd will magically give them the quality back. No matter what you'll never get the quality any better than your starting source. You can not add quality, only substitute...like adding a blur.
