I have read some of the tutorial here on how to do this, But what is the best method and what's the standard method? I'm using tmpgenc, but when I convert avi/divx to vcd, the file mpg is slow larger then the .avi file. Is this how it's suppose to be or am i doing something wrong?

vcd is a constant bitrate of 1150 svcd is 2000+ so the files vary in size related to how many minutes the movie is.

If you use the VCD template then you will get around 74 - 80 minute on a single disc. SVCD will give you about half that.

You can use a lower bitrate if you use the unlocked template and set it up yourself, however the quality will drop accordingly.

Any specific reason it must be VCD ?

I like quality, so I haven't used the VCD format in many years.

Better solution, buy yourself a cheap Divx/Xvid capable player. Burn your avi files as data. You will get 6 standard 700MB movies to a DVD, without throwing away two thirds of the quality.

Then you are pretty much stuck. Tmpgenc is about as good as it gets for VCD encoding, but expect the files to be larger than the AVI files in many cases.
