I have an xvid avi which plays nicely in MS Media player w/ 24 fps. I use Nerovision Express to burn to a DVD, but when I play it on my TV, it appears choppy: an extra frame after every 4 frames. So, it appears that a frame has been duplicated to bring it from true 24 fps NTSC up to 30 fps.
I know this must have been discussed before, but so far I haven't found a solution anywhere on this site or the web in general.
I have Nerovision, VirtualDub, TMPGEnc, TMPG DVD Author, IFOEdit, and a little knowledge of how to use them.
So, my questions are: is NeroVision converting the AVI incorrectly to 30fps NTSC, and is there some setting I can make to correct this to 24fps NTSC Film? Should I be using a program like VDub or TMGEnc to convert the 24 fps up to 30 fps with a pulldown/telecine? (Don't think so).
BTW, TMPGEnc fails to make an MPG with any sound when I feed it this xvid AVI. A problem I encounter fairly often.
Thanks for any advice or answers! Tell me how you get 24fps AVIs onto DVD for smooth playback.

as for the audio, xvids often use vbr mp3, and not many encoders like it at all. if you demux to separate audio and video files you can then convert the audio with an audio editor to ac-3 for dvd.
as for the framerate problem, check the source avi with gspot, and use that data to setup tmpgenc. probably 24p and set the output as dvd spec 29.97i. it should do the rest. save a video only elementary stream. then you can use your output and mux them together.
or get convertxtodvd and let it do all the hard work for you. it's about as good as it gets at avi to dvd one clickers. -
Or try FAVC ,it's a very good freeware alternative..I think you'll be pleased..And if not to your satisfaction, by all means try convertxtodvd, it's Trialware..

The video file is 23.976 fps and its being encoded to 29.97,it has to be encoded at 23.976 fps with 2:3 pulldown in the encoding settings.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
Thanks for the responses!
I think I've found a resolution to the problem in using the ConvertXToDVD software. From the automatic settings I saw for my DVD project, it looks like the software is doing the pulldown to bring it up to 29.97 fps. Nerovision, on the otherhand, did not appear to be doing the pulldown on my 23.976 fps AVI, but rendered a 29.97 fps choppy video.
We'll see how it plays when I burn it. If the original video was 23.976 fps non-interlaced, I may not ever get a truly smooth video.
I think the ideal would have been to render it as "23.976 fps (internally 29.97 fps)". (Unfortunately, TMPGEnc is not recognizing the AVI's MP3 audio). So, I'll keep working on this, but for now, I think I have a reasonable solution.
Thanks again!
