  1. I want to backup some R2 PAL dvds to dvd-r with my Pan DMR-E30. I get the infamous "cannot copy" message. I'm able to backup R1 with no problem using an enhancer. Do the R2s have a different form of protection my enhancer can't handle? Or is there a block within the DMR-E30 to prevent recording of a disc from a different region, seperate from the copy protection block?

  2. How do you try to do this?

play the disc in a DVD player (which one) and try to remove both macrovision and CGMS using a filter device (which one)?

In the US the unit will not record a PAL signal however I assume your dvd player converts the signal to NTSC.

it has no way to tell what region DVD the incoming video is as the region infomation is data on the disc itself inside the .IFO file.

the Macrovision and CGMS detection in a panasonic dmr-e30 is contained in the Panasonic Video Digital Conversion chip MN673744

microcontroller in unit will see if video is copyable from this chip as per block diagram

Most likely your filter is not effective at removing all the copy protection in this case.

  3. I run the video out(yellow) from the all region player into the video in of the corrector/stablizer. From the video out of the stablizer to video in of the recorder. Has always worked fine with region 1, 0 and all region. Just the region 2 PAL that the recorder won't allow to copy. The player does convert to NTSC.
