  1. Hi folks,

What's the BEST program to convert an avi (352*288) to vcd-compliant mpeg? Is it still TMpgEnc?

    Thanks

  2. Some peole say Panasonic, but I find that TMPGEnc still gives the best result for *all* types of mpeg-1 files, not just VCD-compliant. However, I always demux TMPGEnc mpeg files and remux them with bbMpeg, which has a better reputation for muxing compliant files.

You will hear a lot of talk about CCE being the best encoder for mpeg-2 files, but this does not hold true for mpeg-1 (IMHO).

  3. For general MPEG-1, I would say that TMPGEnc is better.

IMHO, for VCD bitrates, Panasonic is better. TMPGEnc is sharper, but it is also blockier (I know you can use a filter, but you then lose detail).

If you do use TMPGEnc, make sure you use toolame for the audio.

CCE doesn't do MPEG-1 at VCD bitrates well.
