  1. Can someone recommend programs that does AVI to MP4 convert faster than Camtasia?

I capture my desktop (1920 x 1200) with Camtasia, and the capture is about 6 hours long. Camtasia takes about 8 to 10 hours for the conversion to MP4 (720p resolution) and the quality is pretty good. I tried Handbrake, and it is a little faster, but the quality is really bad.

My system is win7 64 bits
    Q6600 OC to 3.0ghz
    6 gb of ram

    Thanks in advance.

I understand your desire for something faster but maybe you need to rethink this whole thing. Here's why.
    1) First of all, is there some legitimate reason better than "I am a dumbass" as to why you cannot find 8-10 hours to just let this conversion run? Please tell me you are not one of those morons who believes that they cannot leave their PC running at night while they sleep. I work in IT for a living. You know what IT guys do? We let our freakin' computers run ALL THE TIME! We don't turn them off. You want to hurt me? Take away my ability to have my PC do work for me while I am asleep or at work - that will hurt me a lot.
    2) What is your reason for converting to MP4 to begin with? If you're watching on a TV this is a complete waste of time. You could just buy a Western Digital or similar media player and do ZERO conversions and get on with your life and not have to worry about #1 at all.

I'm not a Handbrake user, but a lot of people like it. Maybe there is some kind of configuration problem with what you are doing. Maybe you are using too low a bit rate with it or Handbrake is somehow botching the re-size down from 1080 to 720. Your desire to re-size down sounds suspiciously to me like some kind of Apple thing - maybe you are watching these videos only on a iPad for example. If it's an Apple TV thing, throw that piece of crap in the trash and follow my suggestion in #2.

I cannot for the life of me imagine first of all why anyone would want to "capture my desktop" for 6 hours nor why it would be something worth keeping and watching again, but if you'd like to dazzle me with whatever you've got going on, I'd be curious to know what exactly you feel is worth all this effort.

To jman98, that was totally uncalled for. Insulting anyone on this form should be a reason to revoke your membership to post anything else. I hope that a moderator will step in and do something about such a obvious and reckless regards toward others who use this form to find help from others who have had the same problems. I myself let my PC do all the work as I sleep if it deem necessary. I have not found any program that would be faster with better quality.
If it feels good, do it.

  4. x264 with the "very fast" preset gives good quality and is... very fast (relatively speaking). Many of the GUI front ends give access to that. You'll probably get close to real time encoding with that.

  5. jman98,

This is really unnecessary. I am asking a question. If you don't want to answer, just move on. Is this too much for you?

I work for IT too. And why would I want to leave the computer on if I am able to complete the conversation before I headed to bed?

The reason for my conversion is is just saving space. It has nothing to do with Apple. I prefer mp4 format because it is a standard format that can play in every devices.
