What video type are you looking at converting it to? AviSynth is a great way to start (paired with one of a number of standalone encoders) but has a learning curve. SUPER is a good quick way to get decent results.

avi is a container for a file type. Use GSpot to render the avi and tell you what file type it contains.
If it's mp1 or mp2 then ffmpeg plus ffmpeggui or SUPER will convert those to an mp4. If it's a Windows avi, then SUPER is probably a better choice.

There are several dozen or more programs to convert 'AVI' to a different format. What do you have and what do you want to convert to? AVI, as mentioned, has many, many formats. Drop yours into Gspot and tell us exactly what you have and we may be able to give you some suggestions.

You should also be aware that if you re-encode to a different format you may also lose quality.

Look to the left. See CONVERT? Click on it, select AVI to ??? and you'll get lots of guides and suggestions for how and with what to do this.

Avi compresses better than most formats.
    Uncompressed AVI is humongous.
Lossless compression (Huffy or Lag) is alot smaller but still pretty huge.
DV is alot smaller than Huffy and Lag.
    DivX is smaller than DV.
XviD is smaller than DivX and
    H-264 is smaller than XviD.

DivX, XviD and H-264 are all smaller than DVD MPEG-2 at the same quality.
