Currently I am capturing ATI-VCR2.0 and transcoding to MPEG at the rate of one capture a day. Unacetable as my sis also needs this computer.

I need something with an onboard encoder chip. I only have 350mhz of processor power. (PII with MMX)

I see some bad reivews on the Win TV PVR. What about the Dazzle DV bridge.

Just to give u an idea.

Their are about 20 tapes sitting here and anouther 40 in a box somewhere. Plus my 50 or so VHS tapes.
    I can spend money.

The Dazzle is a hardware encoder.

  4. well the Dazzle II is $399, The PVR is $240, I have been using the PVR now for 4 weeks, out of the box it sucked it was not until I got the SVCD, manual setting patches from the German Hamppuage web site that this baby started to cook.
Now for VCD it still unaceptable to me, But SVCD's look great on my 36in and my dad's 52in big screen.
If all you want to do is VCD, stay away from this one though.
For VCD I got one better than dazzle and half the price.
Creative Labs UBS Moviemaker, its $199 does VCD and MPEG2, it produces a very sharp and colorful VCD. But MPEG2 has to much lag for my taste.
Tried it out for a week returned it for the PVR because I wanted SVCD, not VCD.
With UBS no opening up computer either, pretty new device been out since last or may. Fry's just got them in 6 weeks ago.

  5. Oh by the way dazzle II $399, you can buy a VCD Stand-a-lone recorder player now for $399, works just like a VCR.
Look at the list this web site provides.
    Can see samples at http://www.avdeal.com/demo

but I can sure you this is going to be fix.
Over all the WinTV-PVR drivers has gotting a lot better.
As for Creative Labs USB Moviemaker is junk pure junk.

I am most interested in VCD, but I also do work with SVCD.

I am getting a new laptop soon from my company. They don't care what I do with it as long as I don't open it. I am allowed to add external devices (video cards, cd burners).

Since the processor will be at least 200mhz faster than my desktop, maybe I should explore USB capture.

thxkid don't you know about my site SHS Unofficial WinTV-PVR http://shs-tv.m0ss.com/ SVCD is now build in PVR 1.4.19205 the SVCD you looking at is the one I pass to Hamppuage a long long time ago.
Anyway Greg12 you may as well count out SVCD with USB capture the bandwith on USB is to small for SVCD capture in tell USB 2.0 come out or build a Firewire ver.
I don't matter weather or not you get a Dazzle DVC II PCI or Hamppuage WinTV-PVR PCI your CPU usage will be very low.
