if your source movie is DVD VOBs, then loading them into dvd2avi will usually display the aspect ratio right at the top of the window (title bar?).

if i'm not mistaken, though, when you load your source video into tmpgenc, the source aspect ratio will automatically be set. i am not sure how accurate it is, though.

what i usually do now to get the aspect ratio to my liking on my final VCD, using the newer versions of tmpgenc, is:

    1 - load the movie
2 - set the output rez to 640x480 for a full vert rez VCD or 320x240 for a half vert rez VCD
3 - under Advanced tab, bring up the Clip frame filter
4 - scroll to some frame in the middle of the movie
5 - clip off any black borders
6 - click on Arrange setting
7 - select Center (custom size) arrange method
8 - set the hor rez to the same value used in step 2 (640 or 320)
9 - alter the vert rez up or down until it "looks right"
10 - scroll to other parts of the movie to verify setting
11 - set the hor rez back to what the final VCD will be (352x???, 480x???, 640x???)
12 - click OK to close the clip frame filter window
13 - set the output hor rez of the final VCD (352x???, 480x???, 640x???)

this works for me 100% of the time when playing my VCDs (352x240, 352x480, 640x480) on my standalone out to my 4:3 TV.

to compensate for overscanning, you may want to reduce the hor rez of the clip, in step 11, by 16 (336x???, 464x???, 624x???)
