  1. The movie plays flawlessly using WMedia Player but when Nero prompted me to re-encode I attempted to open in TEMPEnc and it crashes. In VirtualDub I get: "MPEG Import Filter: pack synchronization error" What should I do?

You have a Mpeg 2 file, it wont load in Vdub, and unless you have Mpeg 2 support it wont load into TMPGEnc either.

Try installing Power DVD 4, its Mpeg 2 codec works with TMPGEnc +

Sounds like there is a clash with some other Mpeg 2 filter, since you could already play Mpeg 2 files, what ever filter is installed, you may need to get rid of it. Try to get to the stage where you cannot play Mpeg 2 files, then install Power DVD 4 again...

Try the Ligos Mpeg 2 filter (Ulead MediaStudio Pro etc), also check

    TMPGEnc
Options > Enviromental setting > VFAPI Plugin > Right click the MPEG 2 Decoder and select higher priority. Do this sevral times until its at the top.
