  1. Hey all,

I just want to be able to open up h.264 files (file extension of .264) in VirtualDub. How do I do that?

not sure if vdub will handle raw h264 video, but you can try installing the vfw version of x264. Exactly what is it you are trying to do?

  3. I'm trying to convert the h.264 file to xvid. I've installed ffdshow and that didn't work. I suppose I could give x264vfw a try.

As far as I know, both of those will only allow VirtualDub to open h.264 video in an AVI. You might use MP4Box or mkvmerge (mkvtoolnix) to mux the raw h.264 stream into an MP4 or MKV (no need for an audio stream), and convert the resulting file using VirtualDub's plugins (or avidemux, or whatever else you might want to use).

  5. You'll probably have to wrap the h264 file into a container like MKV or MP4.

As jagobo says you will have to merg the h264 into an mkv use mkvmerge or mp4 yous yamb. Then use eith avisynth to frameserve to virtual dub or install the x264vfw codec to open the file in virtual dub.

AVIDemux can do that, and has quite a few filters too. Not sure why people want to stick with Vdub in an H264 world.

A lot of other goodies at the author's site too: http://mulder.brhack.net/

  8. just read somewhere and quoting here:

VDUB can handle successfully .h264, x264 or .mp4, if it is de-muxed and re-muxed using mkvmerge to mkv container by using mkv input plugin.
    personally did not tried.
