dvdr write speeds

I've got Pioneer 104, which is supposed to write at 2 speed, I am using unbranded generation 3 media (vivastar), and nero 5582. I have updated the firmware for the dvdr drive, but it still will only write at 1 speed, what determines the write speed, is it something on the disc, or something else?

I have the same problem with my Pioneer A04.
Im using Memorex DVD-R (5 movies burned with no coasters) BUT only lets me burn at 1X.

When I first got the burner and tried the included Pioneer DVD-R it le me burn 2x. Does the burner determine which dvd-r brand can use 1x or 2x?

yup, currently there are only a couple of brands that are certified to burn at 2x by Pioneer, all other burn at 1x regardless. Unless you use the hacked firmware that lets all brands burn at 2x (I've not used it so I can't say if it's good or bad)

The pioneer A04 writes at 2x on media whose manufacturer code is in the firmware. if the media is not listed like vivastar then it will only work at 1x, this is the list for firmware 1.33

I have just got a pioneer 104 firmware 1.33 and am using nero 5.5.9.1.7 and the write tab only shows 1x write why does it not show 2x write as well?

This is even when no blank media is in the writer.

I have not used any 2x media yet is this the reason why nero shows only 1x write.

NERO will only show the 2X when the burner says that 2X is an option (ie, approved media).
