Home video 8.4GB on Dual Layer DVDr want to put on 2 4.7gb dvdr ??

Hello to you all ! My uncle has sent me a DVDr that is dual layer and 8.4gb long. I want to split this up onto 2 dvdrs (4.7gb ones). So whats my next move. I have loaded the 8.4gb file onto my hard drive but now i'm stuck as to how i split it in 2 ?? Please help.

I can think of a couple of ways. Easiest might be using DVD Shrink and split it to two discs. Or extract the whole DVD to a MPEG file with VOB2MPG, split that with about any MPEG editor and re-author the two parts to new DVDs.

THANKS GUYS ! I have DVDshrink but i can't see an option on there to split into 2 dvds ? And shrinking a 8.4gb file to 1 dvd will not be good quality. Can some one tell me the option on dvd shrink to split onto 2 dvdrs ?

It depends on whether or not you want to keep the menus or not, and if this is a single clip or a movie with extras or an episodic disc.

If you want menus etc then DVDFab Gold/Platinum/Whatever is the easiest option.

If it is a single movie then DVD Shrink in re-author mode. You lose any menus, but it is a simple exercise. Just drag the title to left, right-click and select Set Start and End points. Select the beginning for the start, and about half way for the end. Save this as a new disc. Repeat, but this time set the start point to where you ended last time, and the end point to be the end of the film. Create a new disc. Burn these and you have your split movie.

If it is a movie + extras or an episodic disc then it is easier to use something like VOBBlanker to remove all the extras, then save. Load the original up again and this time remove the main movie. Check to see if both fit, and either shrink or use ReBuilder to reduce them if necessary.

For episodic discs, do basically the same as above, but blank two episodes at a time.

I just did this, use alot of tools and a long period of time. I used fab dvd decrypter to rip without the menu's, a frame server to convert to avi, avi file splitter into equal size of video, all-in-one "dvdflick" to convert into dvd.

All the tools are free from this site, and I would of got the same quality from dvd fab. I had time on my hands and learned how to use some different tools.

Just hated putting chapters in though, because the frame server cut them out converting to avi. Don't do it this way, if you don't have the space on your hard drive. Very long files all put together, if you do it all at once.


If you can use the old tools from dvdshrink, you can split a movie. I think you can still get them from Mrbass site.

I used to do it with dvdx and Mydvd (sonic's version). I didn't get chapters and it still took a very long time. Mydvd came with my dvd burner, but otherwise it would of cost some money. DVDFick is a free tool that would replace Mydvd and does a better job.

There is no reason to convert to avi at all to do this, or to lose your chapter points. Of all the ways to do this, you seem to have chosen the hardest.

Done right, the process takes about 10 minutes, with no loss of quality.
