  1. Greetings!

    While the KISS player is still a bit pricey I think it's a given that they will come down early next year when the competition is finally allowed to hawk their own products. I think KISS has the exclusive rights to Sigma Design's chipset that will probably be the basis for all those MPEG-4 players.
    There seem to be 3 "feature standards" inside MPEG-4 as far as I can see:

    SP == Simple Profile
    ASP == Advanced, Simple Profile
    AAP == Advanced, Advanced Profile

    I'm a bit confused exactly what this means, but from Sigma's website I learned that their EM8500 (the reference design for KISS et. al.) supports ASP, but not AAP!
    This may be interesting for all planning to buy one of those critters at some time. If you (plan to) use DIVX Pro 5 you must not use Quarter Pixel (QP) or Global Motion Compensation (GMC)!!

    The FAQs at Sigma and KISS state this explcitly (see also the specs). Unfortunately I don't really know what other features belong to AAP. What about Bi-Directional Frames? Does anyone know?
    I plan to get one of those MPEG-4 stand-alones eventually and abandon my SVCD production as of now to go completely DIVX henceforth. I'm in the process of reading up on DIVX and stuff as I have no experience in that area at all. This may be vital information for all planning to do the same.
    I tried to contact Sigma Design for their future feature set, updatablitiy etc. but haven't heard from them yet.

    Take care
