Ok here's the situation. I have 2 divx stand alone dvd players , one is ultra certified and it will play any avi I through at it. The other one is not ultra and is more finicky about what it plays so I had to start doing things diffrently to have play on both dvd players . Now enters the ps3 that can play divx except things that will play on both dvd players some will play on ps3 some won't . I use ffmpegx and I switched from the divx setting to xvid when I was having the dvd player problems. Now I don't know what I need to do to encode so it plays on all devices in all rooms. I hate haveing to recode several times because my computer is older and slow I want to do it once even if it takes longer and have it in good condition. What settings do you prefer to use that will accomplish this? I did a search but no one had this particular problem.
heres the stats:
computer is and emac : running tiger 10.4.11 800 mhz power ps g4 512 sdram 60 gig hard drive with 60 gig external internal dvd rom no longer rooms so have an external lacie that works awesome.
one dvd is an lg 511 the other a toshiba 50 buck model
the ps3 latest updates 80 gig
so any help would be appricated
I also run ps3 hdmi on a 61" jvc 720p tv so I do like very good clarity when possible I don't care how much space it takes.

Try using a different app, such as AutoGK which has a setting for making files compatible with standalone players.
Aside from that, you can compare the various files that work on all three with the files that don't work with an app such as Gspot and see what they have in common. You general, you can't use GMC, QPEL, packed bitstream, video rates higher than 2000 kbps, or VBR audio.Google is your Friend -
In addition to Krispy Kritter's excellent and succinct reply, keep in mind that resolutions greater than 720x576 almost never work for playback on DVD players that support Divx/Xvid.
Use of any audio other than MP3 may be an issue if the video bit rate is too high, but what "too high" means varies from player to player. -
The PS3 will play Divx (except Divx3.11) and Xvid files at resolutions up to 1920x1080. File size is limited to 2GB.
The PS3 is VERY picky with Xvid files, some play and some don't. The files that don't play on the PS3 will play fine on a LinkPlayer2.
For the PS3... Divx good... Xvid bad. -
I've made a try with a divx made by the "official" Divx Converter
that came with Divx Pro 6.5 with the "home theatre profile" and
mp3 CBR audio: it plays flawlessy in a standalone 30euro player
but it plays for 2sec and then stops in the PS3 ... any idea? -

Sony updated the PS3 firmware recently to version 2.20 which now supports DivX files in excess of 2GB although I believe there is still a 4GB file limit. Also it now supports subtitles whereas before it did not however I haven't had a chance to test this new subtitle support.
In my experience XviD is very "iffy" with the PS3 ... XviD files made with autoGK and using the MTK stand alone option work in my Philips DVP5140 and on the computer but NOT on the PS3 ... well actually some do and some don't ... go figure.
I've yet to find a DivX that the PS3 puked on but most of my files are XviD and not DivX.

Yes.....I read that they don't support closed captions on regular dvds either. Is this true? -
Updated PS3 fw to 2.2 and now it works.
Thanks to all
It should be good to find somewhere a guideline to make divx/xvid 100% PS3 compliants... -
