  1. I have a ati tv wonder tuner, and on most channels, the tuner looks great, the noise is barely visable, so I can make very nice quality recordings from it, but for some reason, certain channels that I'd like to record from, such as mtv, come in very noisy on my tuner, but on my tv, it looks the same as the other channels. Is there anything I can do to fix this, or help with this?

Don't know if there's a cure for this; I have an ATI all in wonder and I also have noisy reception or visible horizontal lines sometimes (even in non interlaced mode).

But you can capture with noise reduction activated with VirtualDub, though I had some kind of "motion blur" artifact. Otherwise, clean your video after the capture.

  3. if the channels are bad on one TV and not on the other (or capture card) it usually means the cable lines to the bad tuner are bad or not properly grounded.

you should try some higher quality cable splitters and cables as well as try using the ground screw on the splitter to ground it... sometimes helps, but usually doesnt hurt.

it is very easy to lose signal strength and get interference from many things if you go cheap on the wiring.

I also have this problem, but I can get round it by fine-tuning the channel. You can fine tune the channel using the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/ATI Technologies/MultiMedia/Features

Somewhere in there is a CHANNELS entry, and this lists the key values for the TV frequencies that have been stored.

  5. I've actually tried switching out the cable, I've tried every cable I have in my house, and they all make it look the same. I dont want to go out and buy a new "better" cable, and then bring it home and find out it doesnt help much, cause thats wasted money. right now, what I do, is I have to frameserve from virtualdub, using the Smart hiQ Smoother at almost its highest level of smoothing. Although it works fairly well considering the input video, its noticable that its been smoothed out. any other ideas?

  6. Try dynamic noise reduction 2.1 and temporal cleaner... they work very good and dont smooth or blur.
