  1. I've captured old videotapes as AVI, converted them to VBR MPEG1 with TMPGEnc, and burned them to CD-RW using VCDImager. The MPEG files are perfectly in sync when I play them back on my computer, but there is a slight audio lag when played in my DVD player. Does this mean I probably need to lower the bitrate a little, or is there some other possible cause?

Unfortunately you didn't say at which VBR in mpeg1 you are using. But it most certainly sounds like your DVD player can't encode that fast. Better to lower the bitrate somewhat. There have been postings that certain media (CD-RW) can cause this effect as well. If it's a rumour or not I cannot say, as I have never had these problems.

  3. It's TMPGEnc CQ (Constant Quality) 50 encoding, at 2500 Kbps. It's an inconsistent problem, as many tracks seem to play just fine, but nonetheless, I'll try easing up on the bitrate a little. Could using the fast-forward seek function on my DVD player also have some impact?

Yes the FF/FREW, pause etc. basically anything that interrupts the normal "flow" has an impact.
2.500kb/s is a rather high bitrate for mpeg1.
