I would like to capture more than 4gigs to an avi file. I would like to capture the best image I can. And from what I heard capturing to an avi file would do it. I know I could capture in blocks of 4 gigs or so. But why do it if I don't need to.

  2. The FAT32 file system has a file size limit of 4GB. If you upgrade to WinXP or Win2000, you can format your hard drive with the NTFS file system, which has no such file size limit, for all intents and purposes.

    No, Win98 cannot use NTFS.

As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  4. Yep, WinXP is definitely the way to go.

  5. Yes ... XP (NTFS) is the way to go. I agree. There is something with segemented AVIs in VirtualDub for FAT32, that works .... but it is not
    very convenient.

So, I upgrade to XP, but my feeeling is that many programs have their individual limits and capabilities with these files > 4GB.

E.g. MediaStudio .... I tried to insert a Video > 4GB (16GB) and just a part of the Video appears.

Many other programms do not even recognize it any longer as AVI or simply crash.

SO, which programms are able to process Video files much bigger then 4GB.

i run across programs all the time with this problem and i just load the avi instead into vdub and make a fake avi to load into the offending program via frame serve.

i also do this to load mpeg2 files into programs that dont support mpeg (fusion , rayz , shake) using dvd2avi -> tmpg project convertor -> vdub frame serve - > program

I have not tried it cause I have Win 2000, but Paragon sells a software that can allow you to mount NTFS volumes under Win98.
