When I try to encode the sound in VirtualDub it always crash. I can only use direct stream copy. Do anyone know what the problem could be?
Also when I select mp3 compression I can only choose 56kBit/s, 24,000 Hz Stereo as the best quality. It should be at least 128kBit/s and 41,000Hz

Sounds like you have a lot of missing codec's, Install the Nimo codec pack, that will give you a MP3 professional codec with a better range, as well as DivX Mp3.
Your other problem will probably go away also after you install Nimo
