Hi! When I encode 16:9 Pal with TmgEnc (last version), the result is too high (it seems not to respect the 16:9 ratio). All people in the movie are tall and slim with long faces. The movies in 4:3 are ok. Did someone already encounter this problem? How could it be solved?

this happened to me when i did toystory 2 . i was told tmpgenc doesn't encode anamorphic widescreen. i was told to use rempeg.

It has nothing to do with TMPG it has to do with the DVD Player. Every DVD Player I've ever used ignores the DAR flag (Display Aspect Ratio) when you play back a VCD or SVCD... DVD's are fine though. Basically regardless of the DAR setting you use the DVD Player will play VCD and SVCD at full screen. What it 'should' do when a 16:9 movie is played back on a 4:3 TV is put the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to maintain the aspect ratio like it does with Anamorphic DVD's ,but this is not the case. I've ran into the same problem making VCD's for a 16:9 TV, they'd look fine on the 16:9 but tall and skinny on regular 4:3 TV's.

Actually, when playing the VCD, my DVD player adds the black bars. Just they are too small. Sorry for the stupid question (I'm a neewbie), but does a solution exist to this problem (except for buying a 16:9 TV)?

Assuming what you have a widescreen tv then in the advanced settings:
on video tab > make sure Aspect ratio is 16:9
on the advanced tab > make sure video arrange method is set to "full screen (keep aspect ratio)", and make sure source aspect ratio is 1:1 (assuming your source avi/mpeg has the correct aspect ratio)
If you cant edit any of these fields. goto main window and save your project, a .mcf file, edit this file in notepad and you will see likes like:
blah.blah.blah.readonly = true
change these to false, for the 2 aspect ration ones you need. (do it for all if you are not sure)
then reload the project and you'll be able to edit the settings you need.
i've done this fine for all my .avi's which were wide screen.
However my dvd player still doesnt auto sense it's 16:9 and I have to tell my TV to exand/stretch the picture out. This puts everything into the correct format which is good enough for me.
if you don't have a widescreen tv then i guess you just need the correct combination of the above settings.
if that doesn't work then, well, i dunno :) -
2 things to try:
1). Try "Full Screen (keep aspect ratio 2)" for video arrange method.
2). Use Virtual Dub to manually add the black bars at the top and bottom of the picture. This will allow you to create a 4:3 source that contains the 16:9 picture with black bars.
I think that both methods worked for me, but I didn't discover method 1 until after method 2. -
I've used the same setting as EnemyWithin: Full Screen (keep aspect ratio 2. When I want it full screen on my 4:3 TV, I select the next one which is "no margin (keep aspect ratio). Seems to work for me.

sredni the small black bars you are describing is not your DVD player adding them, they're part of the video stream. Because movies are usually shot using an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 even on a 16:9 tv (that's a 1.77:1 aspect ratio) there will still be small black bars as part of the video stream.
I take it you do not have a 16:9 tv? If that's the case you should not even be encoding to anamorphic (16:9) you should just be using letterbox. Enemy Within's method should work for what you want to do.

Another thing it's not going to be untill 2007 that the government is forcing all broadcast to be in digital format and digital signal doesn't mean a 16:9 ratio so don't think 4:3 TV's are going to disappear anytime soon.
I watch my (S)VCD's on a 16:9 tv and i still encode to 4:3 letterbox... why you may ask? So if someone with a 4:3 tv borrows it they will be able to watch it non stretched. Oh also every 16:9 tv I no has some sorta mode call zoom or theatre... basically it's for when you watch letterbox movies, it'll get rid of the black lines, 4:3 tv's have no special mode to handle anamorphic video... another reason to encode to 4:3 letterbox.

Download Fit CD, its in the tools section on here, open your d2v or avi file in it, set your resolution and whatever, and if you look theres two boxes with Anamorphic next to them, if your source is avi leave them both unchecked, if its DVD then check the top one but leave the bottom one unchecked, save the script file as ******.avs and enter that avs file into the video box of Tmpeg, voilla.
