  1. How do i convert MPEG1 to MPEG2?
The reason is that i have a 800.MB MPEG1 file, but to get it fully on a CD i have to make S-VCD ISO.
VCDEasy only supports MPEG2 files for making an S-VCD image so i need to convert the MPEG file first.

    Which program is recommended?

  2. an 800Mb mpeg-1 file, if it is fully VCD compliant, will fit on an 80min CD-r, no need to convert to mpeg-2.
If you do convert to SVCD, it will get bigger due to higher resolution and bitrates, but will look no better and possibly worse, and as its bigger, still won't fit on one CD-r!

  3. so why not use VCDEasy to create an MPEG1 image?

  4. That is probably an idea, but an S-VCD can fit more data or?

  5. so by making encoding the mpeg1 to mpeg2, wont make it look better?

  6. No, unless you reencode from a good source, taking a so so MPEG1 you'll get at best a so so MPEG2. You can't make a diamond from a lump of coal with your hands.

I saw Underdog do that once, but he needed to take a little energy pill first. At any rate, I was always skeptical about that.

  8. the thing is, i got a pretty good qual black hawk down in divx. i converted it to mpg1, and burned it as a vcd. it looks pretty good, but i was wondering if i converted it to SVCD would it atleast look a little better because of the SVCD resolution?

  9. Thanks for the info.

You will get a little better picture if you convert Divx to S-VCD.

I have converted several good MPEG 1 files to S-VCD and they look good.
On PC you won't see that difference, but on a real DVD player you will notice it.

  10. faraq, if i may ask what did u encode to mpeg2?

so for sure if i encode it to mpeg2, i WILL notice the difference on my dvd player?

  13. Why not just encode from Divx to SVCD instead of VCD to SVCD. Now thats an idea unless you deleted the Divx.

If you want to go from vcd to svcd and have the original divx file then here is something to consider:

One reason you may want to go back to the DIVX is the framesize may be larger. I got some great divx that someone compressed at 704x480 and I was able to convert to 2 cd vcd and svcd. My player accepts the 704x480 so I do not have to change the frame size unless file size is an issue (which it isn't so far on 2 cd). Many create their vcd 352x240 thereby losing something in the process. If you have such a vcd it pays to go back to a better divx.

Another reason is the compresion rate. The divx may be compressed at 3000 or better while the vcd may be 1150 if its compliant.

Also you may have applied filters that you may want to reapply with the new size and compression otherwise they may have a more significant effect on your video.

You may also want to change your audio options

Another trick for svcd is to try 352x480 instead of 480x480. It works on my player and saves file space if you need it.

Before someone comments: Technically my files are xvcd and xsvcd.

We now know that you don't have the divx so all you want to do is convert from mpeg1 to mpeg2.

Your logic and file size still puzzles me. I cant believe that converting to svcd will result in a file size that you will fit in the same space as a vcd.
The mpeg2 will require a faster bitrate and more than likely a larger framesize. Can't you just create the vcd from nero. 800 mb should be ok.

Since you have a dat file. Where did you get it . Is it still on a vcd? then all you would need to do is CDCopy.

In your case I would say not that you would notice and the file would be larger.

If it seems better its because you increase the bitrate to create an svcd but you can do that with an mpeg1 also.

As I said if you still had a top quality AVI then I would say go for it.

Now what I say is subjective. If you have time, need to be convinced and want to play with it then go for it.

No matter what the results are it won't prove a thing for anyone else just for you. Even if you came back and said wow look how great it looks. It could all be because of how your standalone DVD player interprets mpeg1 and mpeg2 signals. These areas are personal taste and may even be qwirks of our own equipment. A smoothed image may look great to someone because it has no noise but to anothet the loss of detail is not worth applying an image smoother. See its personal taste. That's why so many opinions.

Now! Problem solving, helping someone achieve an objective, offering alternatives or other options and helping to explain results. That's the fun!

Myself, I would do something else. There are too many other tricks to try.

Wow just read all the posts and see how much fun people are having.
