Ok I just did my first capture and it was dropping 3% of the frames.
The capture is from a 8mm camcorder a few years old and the tape was from easter(the big EGG HUNT).I used the composite in on my ati aiw 128 pro 16mb.
The quality looked like an old tv without cable. You know it was blurry and snowy. I also noticed this when I did a sample from a brand new vhs tape.
Is this because of the card being slow or my computer only being 400mhz or is this just how they normally come out.
I'd appreciate any help

With a 400MHz CPU, you're not going to be able to do very high resolutions, so it's probably defaulting to 320x240, causing the blurriness
and/or dropped frames. -
I SEE SAID THE BLIND MAN...
I knew that the dropped frames was from the sloooow c p u but
I didn't know it would cause the blurriness.
If I capture at a 320x240 would I get a better picture?
Is this card sufficient for capturing?
Now if I got a new cpu say for fathers day  would it get rid of the blurrriness?
As always thanks in advance

Give us a little info on how you are capturing....you ARE going to need a faster processor but that, in and of itself isn't going to cause blurriness. I would suggest these few things:
1. Capture using Virtual Dub or AVI_IO and NOT MMC. MMC isn't a bad program per se but it doesn have it's own unique set of issues that make it an inferior choice.
2. Though there is some arguement over whether to use Huffy or MJEG (They are both very nice) I always opt for MJEG at a quality setting of 18...I have tried all options and this gives me the best results.
3. At the very minimum capture at 352 X 480....480 X 480 or 640 X 480 is better (probably overkill but you want EVERY detail you can) but you aren't going to be able to do that until you get a faster processor.
4. Tell us what your end goal is...are you making VCDs? Are you making SVCDs? Are you making Divx? These will all affect which choices you are going to make for the best possible results.
Give us the details and we'll help you out.

THANKS MACRO746,
Just to let you know I'm still new to computers just got it this past October, I have made around 30 vcds to date so I know how to convert but now I would like to use my video card to try to convert my 8mm tapes to vcd/svcd. Mostly home movies made with 8mm cam-corder and some vhs tapes.I forgot to mention that my card is a ATI AIW 128 pro 16mb.
I will answer the questions you asked with the same numbers
1. I tried Virtual dub so I could capture in avi.I tried this and I got an error saying no capture drivers I downloaded the devices from someone in my other thread (you answered in that one as well-THANKS) but I think I did something wrong, cause it still gives same message.
2.Do I use huffy or mjeg with virtualdub or are these diffrent programs?
3. I thought ntsc standards were 352x240 or am I not understanding this resolution thing ?
4.My end goal is to make whatever will be better quality vcd or svcd Considering the source can I even make a svcd that looks better than vcd?
Thanks aagain

Dude ... jump up to a "fast" system. It is truly not hard to make one ... only a philips screw driver is needed ... $540 [tax added] got my daughter a AMD 1700 XP +. Maxtor 60 Gig hard drive ... MSI K7T Turbo2 mobo and a newer modem. 256 MB PC133 SDRAM And a 300 watt tower to put it all in to. Check www.pcclub.com for current prices. I used the store in Fresno CA.
Actually the salesman trimmed the prices off the individual parts to total the amount $540. It was all my mom gave me to spend ... LOL.
As for video capture ... 400 mhz is slow. You wont see anything wonderful until your CPU is going ... Zoom Zoom. You need a ATA 100 hard-drive ... even better is ATA 133.
I use to capture at 640x480 5Kb mpg format ... but something has gone wrong ... I am spoiled ... I want my video capture back to the specs I did have. Check my other post folks ... any help appreciated.
Sincerely ... Mach10 -
Thanks for your reply lacywest
Three problems:
UNEMPLOYED
CANCER SURVIVOR
DISABLED (accident)
ALL in one year- They say bad things happen in threes.SH_T happens
However I am going to probably get a faster processor soon.
As for my sytem when did I say the rest of my computer was inadequate my system came in kit form and I built it myself. I was tired of computers getting outdated before I could learn how to use themIt came with a 400 mhz for free. It's got two hardrives 20 & 60,dvd player, cdrom, cd-rw, 256ram,ATI AIW card, and sound blaster live platnum edition, nic 10/100 high speed broadband. not bad except the cheap processor but it's got me this far. I already had 20gig and cd-rom as well as everything else not listed. Not bad for $350 but not as good a deal as you got
Thanks for the link I'm going to see if they have a cheap price on a new processor I'm probably going to max my board out I think it is 1.1GHZ
Please don't take offense to what I wrote.
Now back to my problem
HELP ANYONE?
VCD4MEWe were all NEWBIES once and the only stupid question is the one that's not asked? -
Alright VCD4Me....let's see what we can do... First of all, when you downloaded the wrapper what did you do to install it? As I recall you should right click on the file (I think it is a .bat file) and select install and then restart the computer. Is that what you did? Because I can't get you any farther without that capture driver installed. For the sake of the rest of this post I'll assume that you have that working (if not I'll try to help more with that step). So, now you have that working you are going to want AVI_IO and Virtualdub (both can be found on the tools page) and then download the Picvideo MJEG codec. Know that I know you have a 400 mhz processor I'm going to suggest that you attempt to capture at the resolution 352 x 480 (you aren't confused by the way, NTSC resolution is 352 x 240...but when capturing you want to preserve as many details as possible before reducing the resolution) I think your processor should be able to handle capturing at that resolution without dropping frames....try it...if not, drop it down to 352 x 240 (the quality is noticable but not earth shaking) Then configure the MJEG codec to a quality setting of 18 (I find that this is the best mix of quality and HD space) and capture away. After your capture is finished, load the video into VD and using bicubic resizing filter, reduce to 352 x 240 (skip this step if you captured directly to 352 x 240) and then frameserve to TMPG. Select the SVCD or VCD template and encode away. If you have any questions about any part of this feel free to email me and I'll se what I can do.....good luck.
Macros746
p.s. MJEG isn't free....if you aren't yet familiar in how to get around such things you can also email me and I'll try to find what you need. -

Unless things have changed ... the socket on your mobo wont adapt to the faster CPUs ... my 400 Mhz wouldn't fit a socket meant for a Athlon Thunderbird. Different pin configuration.
I would take 11 hours to convert a DVD rip to Divx. Now ... it only takes 3 - 4 - 5 hours. Depends on length of movie. If I use FairUse to rip a DVD takes twice as long. Uses multi-pass encoding but quality is great.
I've got a wrapper [ name of file is "Wdm2K.EXE" ] that is included on my Hauppuage WINTV GO cd that enabled me to use Virtualdub ... its about 2 megs in size.
You mentioned a broadband setup ... do you have a high-speed connection? I've can hook you up to some of my programs I use for video capture. My main video card is the ATI Radeon DDR 64 VIVO and it works in Virtualdub too.
I've got a method for FTP access too ... directly from my computer.
Email is ... m4mach10@pacbell.net

Great I'd love some help.THANKS
As for these 2 statements
I too had a computer running at 400 mhz myself. You will most likely have to get a new mobo and PC133 ram to get past 1.1 GHZ ... gracefully.

If you want to try the wrapper I have without worry.
Use WinMe ... "Restore" feature to create a restore point before trying.
Win98 ... backup your reg files before trying. How??
Start ... Run ... Type in ... scanreg ... your regfiles will be backed up. Works in WinMe too.
To restore the regfile created ... incase your not happy.
Restart and choose to go into Dos ... at C prompt ... type in Scanreg
Options will be to choose the regfile of your choosing.
In WinMe ... use startup disk to get into Dos and do same thing ... type in Scanreg ... same options.
If you have MS Powertoys installed ... Tweakui is there ... use Tweakui to invoke a boot menu before going into windows. A option with Win98 is ... DOS mode.
WINME wont offer a DOS mode option in the Boot Menu ... but Scanreg can be used in DOS by using a WinME Startup Disk to get into DOS.
Wont hurt to try the wrapper. Send me an Email and I will send you the wrapper ... and a screenshot of where the backup files are kept in windows.
They are here ... C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP [names like ... rb002.cab] and winzip can open them.
Something else to mention. This forum is here to offer help for people like us. I'm offering you help. I'm a student at Fresno City College to become a Substance Abuse Counselor ... I have a Final Exam today in 4 hours. And instead of studing ... I'm helping you. You need to adjust your attitude ...
