How do I compress videos (and images, if possible) into smaller sizes without losing quality?

filesize = bitrate x running time.
If you want a smaller file, recompress at a lower bitrate. That's really all there is to it.

  3. If your source was compressed losslessly with a not so good method, and it then decompressed and recompressed with another lossless method that offers better compression, the output might be smaller.
In general: If your source is already compressed, there is a good chance that you can't decompress and recompress the content without loosing additional quality, since lossy compression is used and thus quality loss is inhered.

That said, decompressing, light filtering and using a better compression method might produce, for you, visually lossless results while reducing the size.
