  1. Right now I am encoding Dumb and Dumber from .Avi to .MPG using TMPGEnc. It is only up to 3% and it's been running for 3 minutes already. The movie is about 80 minutes long. Is it supposed to take that long or am I doing something wrong?

What CPU are you running? Encoding speed is almost totally dependent on CPU muscle, and also your encoder quality options (faster CPU lessens encoding time, higher quality takes longer).
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  7. Ummmmm, by my calculations 3% of 80 is 2.4 - 3 min. to encode 2.4 min is almost realtime!
