I found the packaged 40463 Virtualdub. But when I choose x264-8 also ffmpeg x265, I get no sound in the mp4 output file.
I was wondering if I was missing something when saving. I did try .AVI output and there was sound.

  2. Did you use Save as, "Any format by FFMPEG (*.*)" ?
What format did you save the file as?
(if saved as MP4, and you left the audio as uncompressed WAV, the audio will not play back)

So I "should have" saved as "Any format by FFMPEG (*.*)"?

There were 4 5 or 6 options using ffmpeg

    Thanks

  4. I've never used it. I guessed that you did from your question. But now (sorry for the misunderstanding) I see what you are talking about: Compression menu, "FFMPEG / x265"

I tried the following and it seemed to work fine:

You have been a great help. I did the save as and chose "Any format by FFMPEG (*.*)" like you said.
And it worked. ( And VLC loved it ) Renamed the extension as it still showed as .AVI to .MP4. Ran Mediainfo on it
and it said .MP4 and showed the audio in it. Now I can say I believe in RiffRaff ( RaffRiff ). Ha ha
    Thanks

To get a better understanding of what is going on, run mediainfo on your original .mp4 and the .mp4 created by simply altering the .avi extension.

Look at the audio codec in particular.

Essentially, you got lucky since you do not really have a proper .mp4 container file but still an avi which has an audio codec that is supported under .mp4. In fact a proper .mp4 only supports a few audio codecs - mpeg (mp3) and AAC. Your avi could have had another audio codec and it still would not have audio had it been a proper .mp4.

The ffmeg demo as above works since it will only encode audio to a format that is supported for a proper .mp4

  8. Agree, DB83. For carversm, let me add that although my screenshot doesn't show it, I did NOT save as, "Any format by FFMPEG," I saved as ".MP4." (I asked about saving as FFMPEG because I thought that's where you got into trouble, not because I was recommending it)

  9. "Any format by FFMPEG" simply allows to detect container format by filename extension. This way it is possible to save formats not listed explicitly (I tried .webm with vp8 codec for example).
However, codec compatibility is not verified. If something is wrong (like uncompressed audio in mp4) the result is just "ffmpeg error" message.
