  2. Everyone will tell you their favorite editing program - and there are hundreds to choose from.
Look under the tools section of this web site.

    Personally I prefer Flowblade.

    Hi,
    I agree with Betwixt,
my favorite for this is Avidemux, or another program able to do this is Virtualdub. But dont forget to re encode video. If you cut random part of video, that is based on GOP, you will get most probably bad start video. Or your start cutting point should start at Keyframe or (I) frame type as is in Avidemux on the bottom where timeline is is frame type. It is most probably Keyframe also.

EDIT: Flowblade seems to be linux only.

  4. I use my NLE, Vegas Pro. It cannot do lossless cuts on most modern (h.264) files, but ffmpeg can. ffmpeg is not easy to use however. So, I save the Vegas file as an "edit decision list" (EDL) file, feed that to Excel, and then with one formula in Excel, I create a batch file that makes calls to ffmpeg. I then execute the batch, and it cuts the original file into individual files.

Any NLE that can save an edit decision list could work.

If this is of interest, I've posted that Excel file, and you can take a look at how it works.

[edit] The file wouldn't upload. If there is interest, I'll upload to a file sharing site and then post the link.

Any file that VideoHelp won't accept natively can be zipped before uploading.
