  1. I posted some question on videolan, but noone seems to know the answers, I am sure you do better. I repeat them below.

I am getting the message: VLC Stream Input Cannot be Opened.

Is this because the URL is https? If so, is there a solution?

I also note that the MRL is https://www........

Surely it should be URL, URI?

    Thanks

I use online tv (streamed), but have buffering problems.

Someone suggested using vlc to avoid the browser problems.

I pasted a video stream into vlc, under streaming, and received errors (above).

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong. Is it the https?

    Thanks

Generally, when I am streaming will the stream be stored somewhere on my pc. I have limited space and will need to delete them

    What are the streaming formats?

I note that on some videos the sound is out of sync with the video, and the video is a bit jerky. Why is this?

    Thanks

Just a thought as I've not used VLC in this fashion, but depending on the source and stream type, the stream could use some sort of DRM which the browser can handle and VLC doesn't support.

Unlike back in the day, I don't believe most current streaming types are stored. The data is buffered and removed as it plays or when the player is closed.

  3. Thanks for responding

The streams are from public sites. I wonder if DRM would be involved

    Would https cause a problem?

Any thoughts regarding the lack of sync between sound and video. This problem occur only on some videos and is not a general phenomenon.

MRL and not URL surprised me.

I am wondering what formats are used by the streams?

    Best wishes

Ps. I wonder why some people stream files that are stored on their pc. why not just open them in a player. In this case, I am asking what is the difference between streaming a file and simply opening it in a player; VLC, for example, can do both.

Streaming implies playing the file from a different location or playing a file and streaming it to another destination.

VLC streaming, for example, you can play a file and stream it across your LAN and anyone else on the LAN can watch what you are watching. Another example would be Plex, where you can connect to your PC from another device and stream any content stored on the computer to that device.

Or in general terms. You play locally, you stream to another device.
