  1. Hi all,
I repeatedly get the following message whenever I try to convert a video in MP4 with VLC, v 2.2.0.

Transcoding failed. It appears that your installation of Libav/ffmpeg(libravcodec)does not include the following encoder :
« MS MPEG-4 Video v1 » Do not contact VLC for this.
This is my translation from French.

    How can this be fixed?
    Thanks.

Upgrade your Libav/ffmpeg(libravcodec), or enable that codec. If you use a codec pack, like K-Lite, you can configure which encoders/decoders are active.

Are using a 64-bit copy of VLC, or the 32-bit version of VLC?

  9. "MS MPEG-4 Video v1" -> you are aware that 'MS MPEG-4 Video v1' isn't even MPEG-4 compliant?
+ afaik v1 was never added to libav, only v2&v3 were (which also are not MPEG-4 compliant)
-> unless you a. have a vfw "MS MPEG-4 Video v1" encoder and b. VLC can use that encoder, using vlc will probably not help
(I also doubt that any recent encoder tool will support "MS MPEG-4 Video v1")

On a second almost similar computer, I don't get this message.

  12. Likely that VLC version was older

Selur is correct - msmpeg4v1 as an encoder was dropped from libav, thus you cannot encode using that with newer VLC versions. Download an old version and you should be able to (but that means you won't be able to decode newer formats, like HEVC)

Here is a (ffmpeg) version fom 2010, the "E" means encoder is available
    DEVSD msmpeg4 MPEG-4 part 2 Microsoft variant version 3
    DEVSD msmpeg4v1 MPEG-4 part 2 Microsoft variant version 1
    DEVSD msmpeg4v2 MPEG-4 part 2 Microsoft variant version 2

Here is a (ffmpeg) version fom 2015, the absence of "E" means encoder is NOT available
    D.V.L. msmpeg4v1 MPEG-4 part 2 Microsoft variant version 1
    DEV.L. msmpeg4v2 MPEG-4 part 2 Microsoft variant version 2
    DEV.L. msmpeg4v3 MPEG-4 part 2 Microsoft variant version 3 (decoders: msmpeg4 ) (encoders: msmpeg4 )

Is there any reason why you need ""MS MPEG-4 Video v1" ?

  13. No, I have the same version of VLC on both computers.
I did not decide to use MS MPEG-4 Video v1.
This is a messge popped out every time I try to convert a video on that particular computer.
