Hello,
I followed the instructions here https://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/lg-dh4220s/12030 for making the DH4220S Region free but unfortunately I made a mistake and changed the wrong digit.
Instead of changing the number to the right of C, I changed the C instead!
Is there a way to enter letters using the remote? I haven't been able to find one. I can only enter numbers using the remote. Or can the EPROM be set back to original some other way?

Look online for the same or an earlier (NOT later) version of the firmware and install it and hope that it puts those hexadecimal numbers back like they were before. The C is actually a hexadecimal number.
Maybe if you get the numbers back on the screen you can try going to a number and pushing the up arrow while the number is highlighted to see if it increments the numbers. If so then just cycle through until you find it. Hexadecimal is this in order - 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F -
thanks jman. I tried applying firmware from the UAE LG site and it didn't restore the numbers.
I tried pressing the same number and pressing every button the remote but nothing worked for adding the hex letters. Hopefully LG Australia will help. -
I'm not criticizing you for not listing your location here. Mine is bogus and there are reasons for it, but I've said that I live in the USA and make no secret of it. I wish you had stated earlier than you live in Australia. By law, you have the right to ask LG Australia to make your player region free for you. I'm sure they will fix this for you. Kiwis have that right too. No other country that I know of put it into law to make region free DVD players a right.

Hey man, sorry this probably doesn't help you 6 months later, but for what its worth, I was trying the same thing and I found that if you long press on the numbers on the remote control then letters appear 1=a, 2=b, 3=c, 4=d, 5=e, 6=f. Now you can enter letters.
Concerning this eeprom change from Ikiban at https://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/lg-dh4220s/12030: I bought my player in Azerbaijan a couple of days ago. I got the last one on discount at this place and it had been on the showfloor for a while. Good for the price - works well. But didn't play my American Region 1 NTSC discs. My original eeprom code was different: f1 00 c5 a4 00 09 80 00 00 00 so I didn't know what to change - the 5 next to the c or the 4 next to the a. I tried them both with no effect.
Then when i found out how to enter in letters I just changed it to the code Ikiban had above (also changing the 4 to a 0). But that didn't work either - no change - still wouldn't play region 1 disc. So I would say that this hack doesn't work.
I was sad until I found this link: http://www.gosoftware.com.au/unlock_lg_dvd.htm which DID work!!! It says:
1. Turn on the DVD player without a disc and open the tray
2. Press pause and then keep pressing zero (0) until a blue screen dialog comes up: it tells you what region the player is set for (mine was on 2 for some reason).
3. It asks you what code you want to put in: Press 0 (means ALL regions)
4. Press pause and turn off the player with the remote
5. Turn it back on after a few seconds
IT WORKED!!!!!!

Thanks for the late update ChuckieD. You got me there in the end!
First up, the press and hold to bring up the letters worked, but after updating the long code the player was still region locked.
Then I tried your way, with the pause and then press and hold 0, and that didn't work at first. The key to success for me was to press 0 several times.
1. Open the tray
2. Press pause
3. Press 0 0 0 0 0 (needed the 5th press)
4. Blue screen appears
5. Update the region code to 0 in the prompted field.
And then finally a Region 1 DVD movies work and Region 4!!! Finally got there. Thanks all
jman: I would have provided my country if it helped!! I called LG Australia and they were unwilling to help. -
Things have changed a lot since I made that post. In the past just about every manufacturer was willing to unlock players for their Aussie customers. Many if not most or all now refuse. An Aussie explained to us that Aussie law allows manufacturers to unlock players, meaning that if they choose to do so they are safe under Australian law so Hollywood can't sue them for doing it, but it's not required. It's 100% optional. So now the reports we get are that manufacturers who in the past used to unlock players for consumers are now refusing to do so. Good that ChuckieD provided a solution for the benefit of those who come here. The situation with Kiwis is essentially the same as Aussies - probably the manufacturers won't unlock the player for you now.
