Looks like firefox has removed the download window that pops up when you download a file and you can't restore it,to access the download progress you now have to click on tool/downloads and get the whole library.

Wish they would leave things alone or at least have an option to restore it like they had before,so if you like the popup download window to still show every time you download a file don't update to firefox 26.

  2. I got used to it quite a while ago (I'm running 64 bit nightly builds so I'm up to 29.something). You can add the download tool to the toolbar and click on it to get the window again.

  4. It's also quite difficult to read the remaining download time using a font that's too small and too faint.

I've just upgraded and it all seems the same. The download window is still top right and as I type says 5m. Click on it and the old window opens.... maybe there has been a correction?

Your using the download window that firefox wants you to use,the download window i want is the one that pops up when a download starts and its a small window, not the one with all the folders in the library included in the view

  7. Personally I find the standard download window quite annoying, at least when there's a way to achieve the same thing without a window popping up in the way, so I've been using Download StatusBar for as long as I can remember.

Thanks for the warning though. According to a couple of comments on the page I linked to, Firefox 26 seems to have broken the extension, but it'd probably pay to keep an eye on it when it's updated. Hopefully, it's functionality will remain the same. I won't be updating to Firefox 26 in a hurry now.

    Have you tried about:config, and
    browser.download.useToolkitUI = TRUE ?

Reportedly, in v26 they did away with that. It's also why extensions like Download Manager Tweak no longer work with v26 and on.

johns0: I know it opens a tab and not the separate window, but how about extensions like Download Tab? I would have suggested Download Manager Tweak, had FF26 not broken it.

  10. The Firefox Version 26 update did it for me. I won't do without the Download Window popping up automatically and showing which files are downloading, how many bytes are still left to download, and how fast each file is downloading. I uninstalled Version 26 and then reinstalled Version 25.0.1. When you uninstall Firefox, be sure to leave the "Delete preferences" box unchecked. This will preserve all your settings and bookmarks.
The trick is in acquiring the Version 25.0.1 installation file from a reliable source. Here's how to do it:

To download a previous version of Firefox, put this address (minus the quotation marks): "ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/" into the "Host:" address bar of FileZilla and left click on the "Quickconnect" button. Then navigate to "25.0.1/win32/en-US/". Then right click on: "Firefox Setup 25.0.1.exe" and left click on "Download", substituting the preferred version-number for "25.0.1" and/or the preferred language folder for "en-US" if necessary.

In case you aren't aware of it, in order to make the download window work in Version 25.0.1, you have to change a couple of lines from their default values on the "about:config" page. They are:
    browser.download.useToolkitUI Value = true
    browser.download.manager.showWhenStarting Value = true

Huh, it just worked the other day for me, now it is gone.
FF must have updated the other day when I restarted my system and I never noticed.

If you click on "Tools/Downloads" the window pops up and stays until you close it.
There must be a way to have it auto popup and stay open when downloading, like NoBuddy said, something in the FF config ?

I´m using Palemoon. IMHO, it´s like Firefox should be... Using it for years, can´t complain at all. All my Firefox add-ons are working, and the usability is even better.

"Now that the new JavaScript API for downloads is available, we will remove support for the now incompatible useToolkitUI..."
Mozilla going nuts, following the windows8 road, taking away stuff and killing options...

You can create a bookmark with "about:downloads" - this way downloadmanager will at least open as a new tab. Or open that in a new window.

I go with the swipe at Win8 Mentality:

"Let's give users less info, make it more
difficult if they want more info, and fewer
customizations. Let's dumb this thing down."

I've gone one machine "upgraded" but the
    others will stay 'better'.

  19. Yeah, I miss the way it was before, when the download window popped up automatically. But I'm getting used to clicking on the download arrow at upper right on the menu bar.

To be fair, that trend exists since the Windows XP era, minimum.
Besides, Google Chrome's useless interface is older than Windows 8.

  21. I don't see any discussion about reinstalling Firefox version 25.0.1 which was the last version which had the automatic download window enabled. In Post #10 I detailed how to go about reinstalling version 25.0.1. Why the reluctance to go back to 25.0.1, at least until some other solution such as a suitable extension becomes available?

Use the ESR of version 24 if you want security patches. It will still be updated for some time. No need to use version 26 if you don't like the changes they made to it.

Download version 24 ESR from the FireFox FTP:

    http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

Current version is 24.2.0 esr from 06-Dec-2013.

Thanks, Vidd. I was unaware of the ESR versions. I did install the 24.2.0 ESR version and plan to stay away from version 26 until an extension becomes available which replicates the functions of the old download window.

Few bugs, but hopefully the author improves it over the next few days.

  29. This is ridiculous behavior on Mozilla's part. A superb and functional feature that stood out from other browsers they just remove - like that.

Shakes my head. Will be installing an earlier version.
