That the nicer DVD players won't play VCD/SVCD's , only the newer, cheaper models do. Case in point, I have the 2109, and can't play them, but my brother's new, cheap G.E. model does. I don't think it's a media issue as much as it is hardware. But, I am new to this, so search on....

I also have the 3109, as well as a 4700, and have the same problems as you. My research into the issue revealed that some people have reported success with certain types and brands of media. One brand in particular is Princo. They make a silver/blue disc that has been reported to work with the 3109. They are hard to find and can be ordered at ioproducts.com.
I placed an order for a 10 pack that I should receive tomorrow. I will report back with my findings.
Also, although this has yet to work for me, I haveread that CD-RW discs have better success than CD-R discs. BASF and/or Verbatim, I believe, are said to work, although I have not tested this.
BTW, I have emailed Toshiba support to see if they have a particular recommendation, but have not heard back. -
thanks for your input so far guys ... i'll keep my eyes peeled for your updates
definitely let me know how 'princo' cdrs work .. thanks -
Ok I got it to work!. While waiting for my Princo's to come in the mail I picked up Memorex CD-RW 80 min/700 mb 4x. I tried to burn a VCD with Easy CD Creator and I got the usual result - the player recognizes that a VCD has been inserted, but can't play it.
I then tried the latest version of Nero, followingthe instructions exactly as laid out in the How To guide onthis site, and it worked! Played like a charm. -
ok so that's good .. seems to have worked but then again it was a cd-rw right .. no luck with cd-rs??

The CD-RW wasn't such great quality and towards the end the video was freezing quite a bit. It's possible I did something wrong when burning and will have to experiment some more.
I did get the Princo's today. They are 74 min. CD-r's up to 16x. I burned the same video onto the Princo at 16x and played it without problems and without any freezing. It was much better. Still more experimenting to do. -
I am having the same problems. I just burned my first vcd using Nero and went to play it on my SD3109 player and just got a bunch of frozen, garbled pixels.!!!! My player even tried to play from the disk I had in the other tray!! I used Memorex 700/80min CD-R. The VCD worked fine on a Sony and JVC player. Any other info would be helpfull. Am going to try using a CD-RW.

Memorex 650mb CD-RW Platinum's are the best for playing (x)vcd's in the player. It doesn't play any other resolutions besides the vcd resolutions, but it does have some flexibility with higher than standard bitrates.
