  1. I have a Toshiba SD-R5112 drive. It is your basic DVD -R player/burner. It's been working fine with other brands. I just bought 100 Philips DVD-R Lightscribe disks. This burner is not a Lightscribe burner but I have a different drive to do the Lightscribe labeling. I just am using this drive for playing and burning data.

When I am setting up a burn job, I can input any other blank DVD-R and the software (using Sonic at the moment) will recognize the blank and tell me how much room is left on the DVD before I start burning.

When I insert one of these Philips DVD-Rs, the light on the drive stays on, and the software does not recognize it or tell me how much room is left.

The only way I've gotten it to do anything with these disks, is if I start a copy job... insert the source disk... let the read process go through .... and when it asks me to insert a blank for burning I can throw one of these in there and it burns the disk. HOWEVER, the finished disk is not recognized by the drive! And even stranger, my home DVD player (attached to my TV) can play the DVD fine! !?!?!?!!?

Is there any explanation or solution? Why would just one particular brand have a problem? They are definitely -R disks, and other -R disks work fine.

    any ideas? thanks!

That must be a very smart drive. It can recognize junk media and refuse to burn it.

Aside from the crappy media information above, have you tried updating the drives firmware? The SD-R5112 is an old drive and likely doesn't have a burn strategy for your new lightscribe media. Aside from updating firmware, all you can do is switch media brands until you find one that works for you. That's just one of the drawbacks of using an old burner.

  10. well everyone was attacking my blank media (except Krispy Kritter) but now I just found it's doing the same thing with Sony disks that were burned on the same drive previously. I guess I'll try the firmware upgrade, but I've read that causes problems too. Maybe it's time for a new drive. Can anyone recommend a good deal on a DVD +/- R burner? If it's not too much more I may even go for a dual layer drive. this one looks like a good deal:

    LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 8X DVD-R DL 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM IDE Burner with LightScribe Technology

    $35.99

Just to clarify, 99% or more of all currently-sold-in-stores burners are DL. Only old stock is not DL. Burners sold "back in the day", of course, also not DL.

  13. well i got anxious and bought that Lite-On before anyone replied. It had a lot of good reviews, only complaint by some was that it was a little noisy when burning. I hope it does the job. It's supposed to arrive today. Man, NewEgg is fast, I just ordered it on Friday!
