Post a small sample (up to 30MB) of the source you're working with.

Here is the file, as you can see it is pretty grainy. This is before I used the Soft Contrast effect in Sony Vegas

neat video has a plugin for vegas (and other programs like vdub), is gpu accelerated and fairly intuitive to use

vdub has dozens of filters you can try
avisynth has dozens of filters and is free (but there is a bit of a learning curve) -
I didn't mean a still image, I'm talking about a clip of the video itself.

How did you capture the VHS tapes?
You could probably have done a better job capturing it
<2Mb/s @ 640x480 isn't really a good bitrate for MPEG1. You should have used something much higher -
That's not grain, that's snow. And you didn't deinterlace, so half the picture field is missing. And the noise is compression blocks formed from using a very low bitrate.
That one's a goner. -

You should capture at 720x480. If your capture device only supports MPEG capture use as high a bitrate as you can. Over 8000 kbps is best. Make sure your caps don't have dropped and duplicated frames (like are seen in the sample you posted). Then you'll have something decent to work with.

Just follow the above link. Or here, again: http://www.neatvideo.com/
This is pro quality stuff. The trial is free (works with max image size 640x480). Retail versions work bigger DVD sizes. Get the Home Edition, the Pro version is the same but for really big formats. Considering what it can do, and considering that pro shops use it, I think the product is under-priced. Extra copies get a discount, so I have 3 copies.
NeatVideo is a spatio-temporal filter. Don't use the defaults; they're too aggressive, for really really really horrible stuff. Learn to tweak the settings. It won't take long, once you get your hands on it. There are many posts here with tips for NeatVideo. Somebody should make a sticky or tutorial for it. Don't look at me, I'm too busy using it right now. But it's an idea.
User guide (now, stop and think about it: How many denoisers give you a pdf user guide to tell you what the hell's going on?). NeatVideo User Guide for Vegas. They also have a forum.Last edited by sanlyn; 22nd Mar 2014 at 21:27.

Neat Video isn't going to fix the problems you have of recording with too little bitrate, dropped frames, and duplicate frames. Get a decent capture first. Then worry about noise and other fixes.

True. Avisynth, VirtualDub, Vegas, etc., can do a lot but you have to give 'em something to work with.
