  1. I need is to filter mpeg-2 to reduce the blocking and other artifacts caused by the compression. For my use the images are just data, I don't care much about the typical viewing qualities and I separate the fields to get 720x240 60Hz video. My attempts to reduce compression artifacts have gone poorly. While mpeg-2 is what I am given as input I don't have to use it for output. Many problems are just a few seconds long so uncompressed is an option.

    1. Which tool (Avisynth, VirutalDub-Mod, AviDemux, Handbrake, etc. should I concentrate on? (using Win7 x64)

    2. Is there a site or link that will provide a long description or review of the filters that are avalable?

    3. Would someone point me to a place to read more about filtering mpeg-2?

    Thanks

  2. http://www.virtualdub.org
    Download and install this program.

    http://compression.ru/video/deblocking/index_en.html
unzip the included file, ending in *.vdf, into the plugins directory, from the above program.

Get the mpeg2 plugin for virtualdub
    http://home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/Plugins/MPEG2/

Install it. Now you can open our video. Go to filters, add, select MSU deblocking, OK, adjust some settings according to the manual, etc.

The right hand side video shows the processed version.
I'm skipping the step-by-step instructions, play with it and if you can't figure it out, you can ask further.
