How to apply a black screen on playback?

I want to be able to completely blacken the video so that i can only hear audio and view subtitles in order to see if their timing is correct without spoiling the video content.

I tried hardware and software brightness on an mkv on kmplaer but brightness stayed the same. I then changed to old renderer, but i couldnt even see the subs. Black screen ate the subs as well.

So how do you figure i should do it?

EDIT: On .avi software brightness adjustment seems to be working. Mkv on the other hand, not so much. Any fix for mkv?

You can script it in avisynth. The following script should render the video black.

Thanx but is there Any way directly from inside the players? I dont want to use avisynth, plus i dont have it installed. And i also dont want to have to write a file each time.

Using VLC, select Tool/Effects and Filters/Video Effects.

Click Image adjust and adjust bightness and saturation.

I just wonder why it doesnt work in kmplayer for matroskas and i dont see brightness controls in media player classic which are the ones i use.

Does anyone know how to get it done on those players, since they are the ones that i use.

If not then i'll just have to launch first VLC for subtitle check and then switch to my player of choice.

MPCHC: if you use VMR-9 (Renderless) as the output device you can use the proc amp controls on View -> Options -> Misc.

Tried it on the mode you suggest but it doesnt seem to be working for matroska... Any ideas why these players cant handle these controls for this format while vlc does make it happen?

EDIT: MPCHC doesnt even work for me on avis as well. And i am using vmr-9 renderless.

Works for me. Did you exit and restart MPCHC after changing the output device setting? It doesn't take effect until the next time the program is run.

Yes, I have exited and restarted. Do i have to install any CoreAVC c264 codec or something?

How old is the video card you have? If it is too outdated, certainly it won't support VMR-9

It's a new PC. I just havent installed any codec/filters.

Yes of course, card's drivers and dxdiag are installed, i just havent installed any codecs. I leave that job to MPCHC and KMPlayer.
