HELP! Black screen/Blue Screen problem

For the past month or so, my computer screen will flash to black for a second, then go to a blank blue screen with no text or anything except a square cursor in the corner for about 5 seconds (or longer), then flash black again for another second, and then return to normal. It does this about once every ten minutes or so.

If I'm watching a movie when this happens, the movie will pause and the sound will stop, then resume playback automatically when the picture returns.

Sometimes it will just stay on the blank blue screen, and I have to do an ALT-TAB to get my screen back.

More a pain then anything else. What's causing this? And how do I fix it?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Check system event viewer log for gpu related events ... if it includes "reset" condition then gpu may need replacing.

first thing i'd do is update the video driver. if it still continued then look for a new vid card like bjs said.
