  1. i have begun (late) my ipod touch v1 to learn about moving video files to such devices in prep for an iPad at some point.

I use elgato turbo.264 HD and videora for most transformations but neither seem to like wmv files. the iTunes lib and pod dont like them either.

is there a freeware/shareware program that can prep these files so either of the two programs above can deal with them?

QT takes the wmv and can copy and past ending up with a .mov but that files is also disagrees with what I have.

    Handbrake also finds them unappetizing.

Try another ffmpeg frontend like ipodme, xmedia recode, freemake video converter. Use a ipod profile.

If it wont work post the details(audio and video codec) from the wmv. Use mediainfo.

edit: OOps. I should have mentioned some mac ffmpeg frontends like Smart Converter.

While the Flip4Mac commercial program works, it's quite expensive.

What I use is the free MovieMaker in Windows7 running in Parallels. That converts the WMV to AVI and the resulting video may then be converted using the Turbo264 hardware/software -or- Handbrake -or- QT Player Pro (assuming you have installed the free Perian plugin).

Free? No. One step? No. Works? Yes.

If you have the free Flip4Mac plugin, you should be able to use QT Player Pro to export to H264 -but- you will have the Flip4Mac watermark (and, possibly, the length of the video may be limited - don't remember).

I think AVIDemux also has some support for WMV files - I used the Windows version to handle some, a while back. Not sure if the OS X version will do it, though (I'll have to test). I believe AVIDemux also has an iPod output preset.

VisualHub. Still the best and can transcode wmv files to iPod/ iPhone/iPad format in less than three clicks.

    1. Drop wmv files in VH window
    2. Select iTunes as the compatible format tab. Select "for all devices".
    3. Click go.( ok)
