should it take about 6 hours to convert an AVI divX file (that's about 550 mb long) to a MPG using TMPGEnc?
are there faster ways to convert these files without sacrificing quality?
should i buy cracked or whole wheat? and why?

Depends on your processor and the length/run time of the source. But 6hrs sounds about right for a slower CPU. I have a Tbird 1.2Ghz and using TMPGenc to conver to VCD takes me ~2.5-3x the source runtime! I normally use CCE thou, which takes ~1x the source run time.

Agreed, I have a 500Mhz 64MB ram and it takes 3-4 times the run length of the clip.
