Hi there all,
I'm a bit new to this and I only know what programs to use to convert a DVD to a video file. So what I want to do is to convert a DVD to a high-quality video file(avi or mkv container) using Avisynth scripts,DG Index to make a d2v project, and Virtual Dub Mod to input the Avi Synth script and to encode.
As for the AviSynth: I do not know how to create a proper script, what plugins to download/use for the current situation.
As for DGIndex: I know how to create a d2v project, since it's pretty easyI just open up the vob files, one after another until there aren't any left, click ok,and save d2v project.
As for Virtual Dub Mod: I do not know what to put in the setting of x264 codec, either WMV9 codec. I know they are the best codecs around, but puting them on high levels(at least from what I see in x264 codec) results in huge video filesbigger than the dvd sometimes
What settings should I put when choosing x264 codec, and what settings should I put when choosing WMV9 codec?
As for MeGui: I never used it,but from what I've heard it does a pretty good job. In our situation I choose to use Virtual Dub Mod instead of MeGui since they both do pertty much the same job
Apart of that, how is it possible to make optional subtitle track for our video file? How do we get the subtitle tracks off the dvd and make them compatible to use with the video file? How do we add the subtitle tracks on the video file?
Well those are my questions concerning DVD to "any video file" converting. You are all welcome to answer them
Thanks in advance

By prompting me to read guides and manuals in general you are not doing any good. The least thing you could do was to give me a specific guide or manual that would solve some or all of my questions. Do you believe now that by this answer of yours,my questions are solved?
I asked for some specific answers on specific manners. If you are familiar with the programs I mentioned above why not simply answering to each question or problem of mine,one-by-one? If anyone has knowledge or is familiar with the above programs, and can give useful advices to me,or guide me up to this process then let it be so. I would be really grateful to anyone that can grant me even one answer to these questions, but please no more baldrick style answers. -
If you're using x264, don't bother with the obsolete Vdubmod. Go search for a MeGUI guide - I haven't seen one in a long time, but I think I learnt from one on Afterdawn.com.
The easiest method is probably to use Handbrake, which produces very decent results. It uses x264 and handles the process of encoding a DVD that has been decrypted. It also lets you retain subtitles if you choose the MKV format. -
I've used handbrake in the past but I can't say that I was fully satisfied with it's funtion. For some reason the process this program is doing to get to the video file is not "right" since it doesn't allow further editing of the video. The quality is good and the size of the file video is pretty ok,but when it's about subtitle tracks,it doesn't create optional subtitle tracks,as I think a program called MKVmerge does(which I don't know how to use either :P). It only creates hardsubbed subtitle tracks, and that is pretty unconvinient if you are going to make a dual audio video file.

It creates muxed tracks just fine, by passing through the subs (VobSub format) directly from the DVD. No hardsubbing involved as long as you keep the hardsubbing box unchecked. You need MKV format to pass through the subs, though. You can also use it to mux in an external SRT file if you have one.
MKVmergeGUI works fine and is also quite simple to use. -
Ok thank creamyhorror. I guess my last questions about the subtitle tracks is solved
