Hey everyone, new user here with a simple question:

I don't want to ask a question that has been answered already a thousand times, but I've searched for this topic and, unless I have missed it, the existing posts don't quite cover what I'm looking for.

I think it's a common newbie question, so here goes:

I have converted an old VHS tape to DVD using a DVD recorder. The file on the DVD is now in VOB format.

What I want to do is take the VOB file and convert it into a different format, preferably MPG. I then want to edit the MPG accordingly. What conversion programme is best to use for this?

I have tried it before, using free software that I have since forgotten the name of, each time unsuccessfully, the file either corrupted and had no sound/picture, etc. There seem to be so many different packages available but some of them are very involved and I don't want to do anything terribly technical, just a simple conversion that many people seem to have mastered.

Can anyone suggest something basic, to convert and then edit with?

    Thanks in advance.

This has been asked 8 million times. See https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/169081-How-to-convert-DVDs-back-to-MPG-files-for-re...thor-or-reedit

If you want free tools use vob2mpg and then edit with mpg2cut2.

If you want the best tool, use videoredo. It can also import dvd vobs directly.

  4. Womble occasionally has free giveaways of their products.

TMPGEnc can remux VOB to MPG.

Thanks for the responses. I knew it had been asked many times before but as I mentioned the other topics that I found were covering a more indepth request than the relatively minor task that I want to perform is.

I previously tried VOB2MPG before but the results were not very satisfactory at the time.

  6. Try Baldrick's suggestion of Mpg2Cut2. It can open one or more VOB files and export as one MPG file.

OK everyone, I'm back to this subject from a couple of weeks ago.

I have another similar, related question to this topic.

I've tried the VOB2MPG software, and the results are very, very poor, resulting in a pixelated, blocky MPG file.

Are there better results in converting VOB files to AVI files?

I've since realised that I can edit AVI files in Adobe After Effects, which, whilst horribly complex, is a better editing tool than, say, MPG2Cut2.

So, opinions? Is it best to stick with VOB2MPG or try a VOB to AVI programme?

    Thanks.

Vob2mpg does not reconvert the video. It must be something else that is wrong. What do you play with? Does the dvd vob look okey?

hehe. that's interesting as vob2mpg doesn't change the video at all. zero. whatever it looks like in the vob, the mpeg-2 vob2mpg produces is exactly the same, just without the vob wrapper.

As far as converting VOB to Mpeg....... you are strictly changing from one container to another...... correct?

There is no re-encoding of the actual content or anything of that nature....... correct?

The VOB is fine, it has perfect image playback both on regular DVD player and on my PC.

I played the MPG back on the regular Windows player, and the results are definitely blocky, in the same way as failing digital TV picture.

And I am simply running the VOB file through VOB2MPG, and nothing else.

Have you tried playing it using a player other than Windows Media Player, like MPCHC, or VLC?
