  1. Hi,
I have an .avi file that I'm trying to load in VirtualDub. I get an error: Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DX50' (unknown) ....

I have install DivX 7 (free, not the pro version). I have seen other posts that reference DX50, but they seem to relate to people that can open the file and then are trying to manipulate it. I can't even open the file in VirtualDub. The file plays ok in VLC and I'm able to edit it using Adobe Premier elements v4.

    thanks

  3. Maybe Divx 7 no longer includes the VFW codec? (There are two video systems in Windows VFW and DirectShow.) Install Xvid. When it asks if it should decode all recognized fourccs answer yes.

Also, if you are using a 64 bit windows there are separate environments for 32 bit and 64 bit programs. 64 bit programs require 64 bit codecs. 32 bit programs require 32 bit codecs.

  4. I reinstalled xvid 1.2.2 (from the link above0 but I still get the error with VirtualDub. I haven't tried uninstalled DivX 7 yet. I'm using Windows 7 32-bit.

  5. Did you enable all fourccs when you installed Xvid? If not go to Start -> All Programs -> Xvid -> Configure Decoder and tick DIVX, DX50, and mp4v.

  6. Yes, they are all ticked off in the configure decoder.

  7. Did you exit VirtualDub and restart it after installing Xvid? VirtualDub only looks to see what codecs are available when it starts up. So if you didn't restart VirtualDub it won't know that you've installed Xvid.

Also, from Control Panel go to Sounds and Audio Devices -> Hardware tab. Highlight Video Codecs and press Properties. Go to the Propeties tab. Do you see Xvid listed?

  8. Yes, I definitely exited VirtualDub before installing the codec, and started VirtualDub fresh each time I used it.

Hmmm, I don't quite follow you on the sounds and audio devices hardware tab. I'm using Windows 7 and I don't think they use the same menu structure as you've mentioned.

I'm not sure if this is relevent, but I opened Windows Media Player -> help -> about WMP -> tech support and got a list of installed codecs. The attached picture shows the result. Perhaps this just shows codecs that are accessible to WMP but not necessarily to other programs installed.

thanks for you help on this!

  9. AH, Win7. Try right clicking on the Xvid installer and selecting Run As Administrator.

  10. Nope, that's not it. I re-installed to make sure I did the Run As Administrator. No change. I also tried running VirtualDub as administrator.
