I'm using Virtualdub 1.9.6 and am having a problem loading wmv files and I have the wmv plugins and in the VFW configuration I have wmv1/7, wmv 2/8, wmv 3/9 and vc-1 all marked as wmv9. I still get "asf files not supported". Any ideas as to what to do?

    thanks

Run one of the videos in question through MediaInfo, tree view, and post the information here.

WMV/WMA are just the latest version of ASF, really. Are you sure all of your VirtualDub program folder and plugins are up-to-date?

  3. asf support ended about v1.3 of vdub. let you guess who demanded it removed.

The WMV plugins must be placed in the "plugins32" folder, to begin with.
ffdshow VfW is required to open/encode VC-1 in AVI, AFAIK.

I'm pretty sure the plugins are up to date. I downloaded them from the this site under the guides for Virtual Dub plugins.

@El Heggunte, I have all of my plugins in the plugins folder, I just can't remember if the folder is called "plugins" or "plugins32". I'm at work now, so I'm not sure.

"plugins" is for the .vdf files.

"plugins32" is for the .vdplugin ones.

All you need is a plugins folder unless you are running a 64bit OS then you would have a plugins32 and a plugins64 folder.

uglijimus, we need to know more about the file you cannot open. Post a mediainfo text or screenshot.

As long as you have the WMV Plugin in the Plugins folder and ffdshow vfw configuration for WMV1,WMV2 and WMV3 set to WMV9 and VC-1 set to libavcodec then you should be able to open any windows media file. You also need the DivX 3.11 codec since Virtualdub sees the audio of a lot of windows media files as DivX 3.11 audio.

I assume you have the WMV9 codecs on your machine.

Do you have problems opening any other WMV files in Virtualdub or just asf files or only certain asf files?

You're right. Thanks for the correction.
Me too was misled/misinformed by the readme.txt written by Mr. FCChandler.

    I'm using a 64bit, but there is no plugins64. Only a plugins32.

I'm including a screen shot of my plugins folder and info from the file itself.

    here is the file info:
    C:\Program Files\new folder\112513.wmv

    File : 75 MB (75 MB), duration: 0:05:04, type: ASF, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 91 %, ,
    Video : 69 MB, 1909 Kbps, 32.338 fps, 640*480 (4:3), WMV3 = Windows Media Video 9, Supported
    Audio : 5.79 MB, 160 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x161 = Windows Media Audio 9, , , Supported

I have everything set up just as you said in the above paragraph.

    >

so far, no other problem with other files. But ANY WMV files will give me the same "asf files not supported"

I have 1.8.8 VirtualDub and the the WMV files load just fine.

    any help would be appreciated[/b]

If it works in version 1.8.8 then it should work in a newer version of Virtualdub.

I'd install Virtualdub 1.9.3 and either reinstall all the plugins or copy everything from the plugins folder of a working version. Every time I upgrade, I just copy the contents of the plugins folder to the newer plugins folder.

You may need to contact Phaeron in the Virtualdub forum and find out what to do with a 64bit version. I just installed the 32bit version on my friends computer with 64bit XP and installed 32bit codecs...

Installing the 32bit codecs on Windows 64

Extract all the files to a folder

Open up a command prompt (start->run: cmd)

Change directories to sysWOW64 ("cd C:\windows\syswow64")

Type the following (replace example_path with the actual path to the extracted files), then hit enter:
    rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 0 c:\example_path\AC3ACM.inf

This method can be used for installing all 32bit codecs that install via a .inf file.

I just realized mpeg2 files do not work either.

I think I'm going to stick with the 1.8.8 32 bit version (since it gives me less headaches) until the 64bit becomes more compatible. Thanks for all of your replies. I hope others will find this thread helpful as well.
