  1. Is it possible to append videos that have 2 different compression settings using virtualdub? if not are there any freeware programs that can?

  2. What do you mean by different compression settings? If they're different codecs you will have to reencode at least one of them.

    Yes, get it here: http://www.tateu.net/software/dl.php?f=qtvd_bin.

It doesn't seem to work with Quicktime 6.x, so you need at least 7.x.

  5. I installed Quicktime 7 and the lastest version of Virtualdub. I put the .ini file where the .exe of virtualdub is and the plugins32 folder in the vdub directory. The I was able to load my .mov quicktime video into virtualdub but it is at a very slow framerate, is very choppy and is just simply not playing right at all. So I went ahead and tried to convert it to .avi and it was processing very slowly at showed the framerate at 12.3/

The video is either 60 or 30fps originally, cant remember which.

Any ideas what would cause this? It is likely that the PC I have this installed on is missing a codec that is needed, but I don't know which one....

  6. I've found that the MOV/MP4 plugin for VirtualDub often gives the wrong frame rate. If you now what the real frame rate is you can just go to Video -> Frame Rate... in VirtualDub and set it at the top of the dialog.

  7. It's not just slow, it's extremely choppy and jerky. I checked the framerate within Virtualdub and it shows 30fps, which is normal...

  8. VirtualDub is not designed as a player. Don't expect smooth previews with it. Don't expect realtime conversion either. How does the resulting video look when your done? Smooth? Jerky?

  9. Ive been using vdub for years and have never seen it playback jerky like that. I didn't let the video finish processing because I assumed it was going to be bad since it was taking 5x longer than normal videos, but I will try again later and get a fully processed video and see what it looks like.

    Thanks!

What are the properties of your problematic MOV file? High resolution? h.264 encoded video? Both of those things will require more horsepower.

Use the Mark-in and Mark-out tools to select a small segment. That will make for a much quicker test.

  11. If that's not working out for you, another alternative to check out is avidemux

  12. Yeah I tried a little test run and it's still all messed up. The video is MP4v 640x480. AVIDEMUX crashes when I try to open it.

  13. Going back to VirtualDub and Quicktime import plugin...
What is used video decoder mode? Look at File information option.

For H.264/AVC video by default is used ICM Decomp mode - usually 'works' correctly.
For other video by default is used Decomp Sequence mode. However... video is not decoded correctly.
If have installed some VfW codecs (x264vfw, 3ivX, ffdshow VFW with active support some QT codecs), then by default is used VFW mode. However... does not always 'work' quite correctly.

Try manually change video decoder mode to ICM Decomp for H.264/AVC and to MoviesTask for other video.
When open file set Ask for extended options after this dialog option, then have access to plugin import options - also, can use Save to Quicktime.ini option (of course can manually edit Quicktime.ini).

    BTW
QTSource plugin for Avisynth by default uses MoviesTask mode.

Can play correctly this video file in QuickTime Player?
Repeat jagabo question: "What are the properties of your problematic MOV file?". Use MediaInfo.
Maybe upload problematic video file example on http://kotuha.com.
Can cut fragment used MPEG Streamclip and save used Save as... option.

    Other...
Can use DirectShow import plugin for VD or Avisynth script with DirectShowSource - of course if have installed required DirectShow filters ('for playing').
Can use Avisynth script with QTSource.
If it's H.264/AVC video... can demux used Yamb (MP4Box), create .dga project used DGAVCIndex and use Avisynth script with DGAVCDec (AVCSource) plus eventually BassSource for audio.

  14. Ok, I changed the mode manually in the quicktime.ini file to 3 and it seems to play better. What are some good compression codecs to get for virtualdub for processing files into .avi fast and with good quality? I had a lot that I was using before I reformatted my PC, but lost those and don't know the names of them...

Just try Xvid or DivX - set similar bitrate as source (eventually, use target quantizer mode with 4 (default) or less).
