Ok I bought a usb ide rocketfish harddrive enclosure for the harddrive I replaced in my emachine. I was figuring it would be easy enough to just pop it and then install the drivers and be able to start copying the files over.

However it hasn't popped up yet. I ended up downloading the drivers from thier website. I still didn't get a new drive in the my computer window. I have rebooted since then but still no go.

The odd thing is I'm trying to reinstall a printer but it give s the message you can only install one device at a time and you can finish when it is complete.

How can I force a complete install? I had done the roxio backup software that came with it but I had to to shut it down a couple of times since it was hanging.

    Suggestions?

    win xp ?

does the drive show up in "Disk Management" ?

if so, you probably have to format it for it to show up in your explorer. i had
the same problem once and had to use an older pc with win2k as win2k has
a feature to do this and they took it out in xp :/

Disk management? I need help remembering where that is in xp.....

I don't want to format this. I want to recover the files.

@minidv2dvd - I will try another drive another day. I'm gonna call it quits soon.

I was able to get the setup killed so I could get my printer going.

    Thanks.

@budz - thanks. I had just found that on a yahoo search and found a ms kb article on it.

    I did not see it.

I think I'll have to try a different harddrive tomorrow or later in the week. Hopefully the drive is still good.

  7. Right click on My Computer. Select Manage. Select Disk Management on the left. You shouldn't need any additional drivers to use a USB drive with XP -- it has the driver built in.
