  1. I would like buy IDE to USB adapter cable http://www.cross-mark.com/3in1-sata-cable-adapter-serial-p-772.html for my old IDE hard drives, but I haven't tried that before. Can anyone tells me it can hot plug the hard drive to usb cable? If yes , is there need a driver for this device?

    Thanks

You'll have to ensure the drive is set to Master, Slave or CS if IDE.

If it's set up right, these work fine - unless the power supply or cable is bad.

Yes, I've had one shipped that was bad.

They're not made extremely well, but get the job done.

I used a similar one when cloning my laptop hard disk.
It worked with Win2k and WinXP, appearing as a USB disk, so if you can use, eg, USB flash drives, it will work with the OS drivers. "Hot plugging" at the PC end seemed to work, again as well as any USB storage. But I would take care to connect the header to the drive before plugging in the power or USB connection to the PC

However, I had mixed results using Linux, some software would detect the drive, some didn't, and I never got any Linux cloning software to work with this. But the free XXClone for Windows worked more or less, with Fat32 more reliable than NTFS, though YMMV.

Sadly my PC only has USB 1.1, so backing up was very slow, if you have USB 2, it should be more pleasant.

For 2.5" drives the power comes from the USB cable, for 3.5" you need the separate power cord.

Really? I didn't play with my jumpers, it was set as Master, but I thought it would be irrelevant for USB connection.
(And which of "Master, Slave or CS" anyway?)

There are no other options to set a drive to...

I wouldn't suggest that model. I'd go with the bytecc model. Because its power seems to be better implemented and I've ran to situations where you'd have to have correct sata and data corrections, separate connections would be difficult.

Keep your phone away from it though. Its more expensive but its dependable and works well in most situations. Its a standard USB Drive, so anything above windows 2000 will already have drivers for it.

Actually, Win2k copes with USB drives quite well, except for the annoying "stop this device before removing" nagging that XP seems not to have so much.

I'm sorry I meant to print windows 2000 and above.

Its a good idea to properly eject your drive because the OS doesn't flush its buffers until you do. I wish they would flush it after they are done and just leave the drive alone, in a perpetual state of being ready to remove.

bytecc's do not need any driver other than what is already used for usb storage devices. if a usb memory stick works on your comp it will also. i have several of them and the always work without any problems.
