    Hi all:

I have some video files that I would like to keep and record to a DVD, but those files (I have 10 episodes) are causing some troubles. When I am browsing trough its folder my Explorer crashes, when I try to open them with some programs , like Gspot,
medialinfo etc... those programs crash too.But this is not happening evrytime.Sometimes I manage to open them or even make a copy using avidemux. One thing is for sure sooner or later I will have a crash on my explorer when browsing those files(I dont even need to play them)!!!.Any idea of what is wrong with those files.
Can i do something so recover them ??
    tks in advance

some specs of these files : DIVX STYLE "PACKED BITSTREAM" AVI
    CODE DX50 DIVX 5.1.1 - PICS. 25000

It sounds like the explorer preview crashes, try disable the preview. See https://forum.videohelp.com/topic304930.html#1547155

And have you installed any codec packs or other video tools lately? then try uninstall it.

    Hi Baldrick:

The first thing that came to my mind was really to check if I had installed any codecs lately.Nut no, I had not.
Besides that I uninstalled divx and Xvid to see if that was the problem (I use Kmplayer so I dont need any codec packs)

    I will check preview disabled.

One thing I can add Is that I managed to burn 5 of those video files into a DVD.
Tried to play them and 4 played fine 1 freezed Kmplayer !!! I think that among the 10 files some have problems and some dont.

will keep trying.I wonder if I manage to convert to another format what will be the result !!!what format do you advice ??DVD ???

Ok so I did the following:

First removed image preview with the command regsvr/32 /u shimgvw.dll nothing happened still crashing
Then removed media preview and it stopped crashing.

In sum : that doesnt means the files are good.Right ?? there must be something wrong with those files.

The functions I disabled (image and media preview) are they important or not ?? shall I keep changes ??

    hilario,

For playback, you're correct, kmplayer has its built-in codecs so you should be fine. I've used VLC and MPCHC but have stayed with MPCHC. Same idea, self contained.

However, that's not the case with media preview/thumbnails views. These require the correct and current codecs installed in order to display them. Your excellent decision to avoid a 'codec pack' was a good one. Though I don't use it, I've seen other members in good standing here recommend using ffdshow. If you want to keep the preview this may help take care of the problem.

I had the same problem (crash on preview) a while back and narrowed it down to an older version of xvid. Going to the author's site and downloading the most current version (I needed the latest for Vista compatibility) fixed the problem. Now that I think about it, the xvid problem was the second time it happened to me. The first time the preview/thumbnail thing happened was an issue with Nero. I didnt' used it much so got simply got rid of it. Had to reassociate some file extensions but all was well.

Anyway, there shouldn't be any problem with media preview if all the files your dealing with show the same settings you list. If there are, there's probably something wrong with the files themselves.
    Have a good one,

    neomaine
