I need help with creating files compatible to be played on a BR player from a DVD-R disc.
- I helped my father buy a Panasonic DMP-BD35K Blu-Ray player as it is reported to be one of the best.
- I don't have a BR player myself (yet).
- I don't live anywhere near my father (I support his PC/technology needs remotely) so I cannot easily test anything.
I am capturing & converting a bunch of Hi8/Digital8 videos for him from his old camcorder. So far, I've been creating them in AutoMKV with a solid x264 profile, H@L3.1, with known good compatible parameters that should play from a variety of sources if needed (Sage HD200, Popcorn Hour, DXVA @ Windows, etc.)
Unfortunately, I don't expect him to buy a Popcorn Hour or WDTV any time soon, so I thought I could create files compatible with his BR player.
Does anyone know the answers to these questions?
- Is it required I create an AVCHD structure on a DVD-R disc to play x264 files? What tool would I use for that?
- Or... can I just throw my x264 created files on there in AVI or MP4 format and have it recognize them? Are there certain parameters I need to use to be compatible with a Blu-ray STB?
Thanks!

1) yes you need the structure authored, you can use tsmuxer, and burn with imgburn/nero using udf 2.5 profile. Another option is multiavchd which even does simple menus. Neither re-encodes, they only author
2) It depends if your files were avchd compliant to begin with. They have to be full frame (i.e. not cropped), you need --nal-hrd, --sar 1:1 , proper VBV settings. Also some players are more resiliant than others, and able to play lax settings, maybe even the ones you've already encoded. Some are very picky and don't play much of anything unless completely compliant. Some firmware revisions actually inhibit or make playback of this format more difficult, so make sure you search on your specific model. I think AutoMKV has some borrowed presets from MeGUI, the "Standalone AVCHD" preset is the one you want for the highest probability of success. -
Thanks.
So regarding #2, does anyone know what those specific parameters, resolution, etc. is needed for the Panasonic? What container format do BR players support? I prefer MKV, but I assume that is not one of them! -
I can answer the resolution question: full frame, ie. 1920x1080/24p, 1280x720/24p , ..etc none of the cropped stuff like 1920x800 etc.. essentially you leave the black borders for non 16:9 movies
Here are the specs for avchd

It seems the majority of players have no problems (except FF and RW might not work properly on some players) with the MeGUI profile settings. If you don't get any hits here regarding specific firmware revision, or adjustments required to the basic "Standalone AVCHD" profile encoding settings specific to your player , consider searching then posting on Doom9 or avsforum for info on your specific model.
