I'm looking for an inexpensive DVD Player that has HDMI out and will play Matroska & avi files. That's probably asking for soon to be outmoded hardware equipped with stateoftheart firmware but if anyone knows of such a device I'm interested.

I store all of my backups on dvd. I just can't spring for a blu-ray player.

I'm hoping to spend less than ... ideally $50 but I'm willing to go up to less than $100.

Is there such a beast out there?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

You can search for AVC/H264 support in the DVD players list (to your left). I would doubt you will find much that supports the mkv container.

What you are really after is a media player with a HDD, but that will blow your fairly frugal budget.

  3. If you have a USB external drive sitting around you might consider the Western Digital TV HD Media Player. It sells for about US$100.

yah, I found like, PS3 and a couple high end blu-ray players. I'm trying to get away from storing my stuff on drives. I thought this would be a wild shot in the dark and it looks like it was. oh well.

Other than blu-ray/PS3, I don't know of a single "disc player" that plays H.264 video.

The PopcornHour, Ziova CS615, Tvix 6500, etc are some choices for playback, but not "disc" players or even priced under $100. I don't know of any in your budget.

As for MKV - very rare in stand-alones.

However, let's see if DivX, with their DivX 7, an H.264 implementation (as is x264), can convince the CE market to carry MKV. If they do, then you can expect many players of what you're looking for to be available within a year.
I hate VHS. I always did.

What a game changer that would be. High def playback would be available for the masses, and despite the inevitable increase in matroska torrents, the sales of Blu-Ray players and disks would go up substantially.

As to full-throttle's question, I would recommend the WD-TV. Keep in mind that it also plays from flash drives so you can copy your night's viewing from DVD-R to flash drive. I have been very happy with mine.

Thanks for all your comments. I'll probably look into the WD. I think I've seen it for ~$118. I did want to store everything on DVDs but I guess it wouldn't be much of a hassle to copy from dvd to flash drive. Only need 1 UFD and I get to keep the savings of burnable media.
