  1. I have a fair number of HD DVD's that I would like to convert to a high bit rate (720p) DVD, and would like to know if this is possible. If this can be done, what tools do I need to attempt this. All your comments are greatly appreciated.

  2. 720p is beyond DVD Spec

You can make a 720p AVCHD format video to burn on DVD-5, playable on Blu-ray players and PS3. Easiest way is probably ripbot264. DVD-9 will allow you to get some better quality

Is it limited to only 720p or can you also make a 1080p AVCHD format video and burn it on a DVD-5 and DVD-9?
    Panasonic 50" (TH-50PZ800U)

  4. No you can use 1080p, or any legal blu-ray spec resolution, although at typical bitrates, don't expect to fit very much running time on a DVD5

Also not all standalone players accept "BD5" or "BD9" (blu-ray format authored and burned onto a DVD5 or DVD9), and sometimes finicky about the media used. PS3 so far seems to be the most forgiving device.
